Description

The International Magnesium Association (IMA) published a brochure Magnesium: The Lightest Structural Metal in December 2018. This brochure provides a concise summary of physical, chemical and mechanical properties of cast and wrought magnesium alloys for structural applications. The mass saving potentials of magnesium alloys are higher than other major structural materials such as mild steel, advanced high strength steel (AHSS), aluminum, polymers and polymer composites. The brochure also describes the general and galvanic corrosion properties of the most commonly used magnesium alloys. Protection measures against galvanic corrosion and surface finishing of magnesium products are also discussed.

The brochure was complied by Professor Alan A. Luo of The Ohio State University. A special appreciation is due to Hydro Magnesium for its previous publications used in this brochure. IMA member companies including US Magnesium, Magnesium Elektron (now Luxfer), Meridian Lightweight Technologies, Dead Sea Magnesium, Magontec and POSCO supplied technical information in this brochure.
