About ths IMA Awards of Excellence
The International Magnesium Association (IMA) recognized advances in magnesium technology, products and processes with the presentation of the 2016 Awards of Excellence during the 73rd Annual World Magnesium Conference held in Rome, Italy in May. The Awards of Excellence competition was open to all companies demonstrating outstanding examples of magnesium's use, as well as magnesium products and manufacturing technologies in three categories: Design, Process, and Application. The IMA Awards of Excellence highlight how the magnesium industry is continually working to improve the manufacturing process and companies that provide innovative and improved products made from lightweight magnesium.
The Design Category includes subcategories for Cast and Wrought Products and the competition seeks unique, novel and creative designs and product developments. The winning entries in this category demonstrate design and engineering that is a significant advance over current practice.

Dongguan Eontec’s first research meeting for degradable fixation screw of magnesium was held in Wuhan
Recently, Dongguan Eontec’s first research meeting for degradable fixation screw of magnesium was held in Wuhan. During the meeting, test plan and test operation details were discussed, aiming to come through the one-time hospital ethics review.
Vice-general manager Wei Rongli of Dongguan Eontec introduced the company and product situation, and outlined the research results from project investment. Zhao Dewei, director of Zhongshan Hospital affiliated to Dalian University, introduced magnesium alloy screw application in domestic and foreign markets, especially magnesium screw application as screws for femoral neck fracture, fracture of metatarsal bone, ankle joints fracture, and tibia bone defect. He affirmed the good effect by magnesium screw fixation and osteogenesis. In addition, Dr. Heqian from the department of biostatistics, Second Military Medical University, introduced the number of cases and statistical methods.
Mr. Zhao Dewei shared the clinical practical experience, operation test implementation process and conducted in-depth exchanges and discussions with related experts. They said that the characteristics of magnesium screw and the early application are exciting, and they will support and promote the progress of the project.
Fugu Magnesium Association regulate the order of primary magnesium market to stop the tax-exclusive sale
On June 8, Fugu Magnesium Association held a meeting of primary magnesium market and said the current domestic primary magnesium market is irregular to some extent. Tax-exclusive sale is very active, which seriously disrupts the normal order of primary magnesium market and leads to the tax evasion. Because, in domestic production of primary magnesium, 60% of primary magnesium are from Fugu, Fugu Magnesium Association, on June 8, held a meeting attended by responsible persons of magnesium enterprises in Fugu. According to the meeting, a variety of effective means will be taken, including the joint efforts from local government departments in charge of industry and price, to prohibit tax-exclusive sale from magnesium enterprises in Fugu and to standardize the market order.
Baosteel develops high strength magnesium alloy seamless pipe
Recently, research team of magnesium alloy from Central Research Institute, Baosteel, for the first time, successfully developed a super-long and reverse-squeeze high strength magnesium alloy seamless thin wall pipe.
Compared with ordinary pipe, the mechanical properties of the high strength magnesium alloy seamless pipe are more excellent, and anti-fatigue property and the secondary-molding processing performance are greatly improved. The product can be used in aerospace, military, automotive and rail systems, as well as high-end outdoor sports products, and has a broad market demand and application prospects.
The successful trial of the product, showing the strength of R & D team from Baostell in the field of magnesium alloy, will boost the rapid transfer from steel & iron to new material business in Baosteel.
Fugu Taida Coal & Chemical plans to overhaul magnesium production line next month
On June 28, Fugu Taida Coal & Chemical, with 80t/d of output for primary magnesium, announced the company plans to shut down and then overhaul magnesium production line in July. Although the final date has not t been finalized, the company at present has not received large orders. Now the company has no magnesium inventory. On Jun 28, its primary magnesium was quoted 13300 RMB yuan/t (inclusive of tax).
The company, by the construction of 9 recycling production lines but with 600kt/a of semi coke as key project, makes 11 products, including coke, tar, gas, ferro silicon, magnesium, electric power, coal, reduction pot, lime, and calcium carbide. Its capacities run as follows: 600kt/a of semi coke; 2 X 25000kVA ferrosilicon furnaces; 20kt/a of primary magnesium; 2 x 25MW gas power plant; 1.2 million tons /a of washing coal; 10000 reduction pots annually; 250kt/a of lime, and 4 x 25500kva calcium carbide furnaces.
BYD plans to set foot in magnesium industry
On June 21, BYD announced the company, during 2016 China Qinghai Green Investment and Trade Fair, signed cooperation framework agreement for lithium resources development in salt lake with Qinghai Salt Lake Industry and Shenzhen Hongda Industrial. The parties will complement each other through the development of strategic cooperation on the development of lithium resources in Saline Lake. On lithium industry--New Ecological International Forum held on June 20, BYD chairman Wang Chuanfu revealed that BYD will cooperate with Qinghai Province of rich resources, plan to construct 10GWh battery factory in 2016, and develop magnesium resources in Qinghai.
In his speech, Wang Chuanfu specifically mentioned magnesium resources. Wang Chuanfu believes that in addition to lithium, magnesium resource, in the era of electric vehicles, will take an outstanding role. "Light weight in car has been talking about, but it is just a slogan, only the electric car lightweight will really be on the agenda. Because it is necessary to increase the mileage, reduce the battery and reduce the cost, light weight is necessary." He said magnesium is lighter as plastic but strong as metal, it will be mentioned on the agenda. "China is a major country of magnesium resources, but there are a lot of problems in the end use, such as few magnesium processing facilities. In China, foreign technology finds wide application in iron and steel, and aluminum, but none for magnesium. BYD also plans to join government of Qinghai province and create a new chapter in the development of magnesium resources."
Wenda Magnesium Technology applies for listing on NEEQ system
In June, Guangdong Wenda Technology Magnesium formally applied for listing on NEEQ system. The company mainly engages in magnesium alloy die-casting parts for lighting and automotive segments.
Formerly named Zhongshan Wenda Magnesium Technology, Guangdong Wenda Magnesium Technology, established in April 2008 and then completing share reform in April 2016,Magnesium, locates in Tanzhou Industrial Zone Zhongshan City. In 2014 and 2015, its operating income was 13,761,200 RMB yuan and 27,456,800 RMB yuan, respectively; and net profit in 2014 was 407200 RMB yuan(negative) and 1042300 RMB yuan (negative) in 2015.
Wenda Magnesium Technology mainly engages in the development and production of magnesium alloy, aluminum alloy, zinc alloy die casting structure parts and precision mold. Its products are widely used in LED lamp, lightweight automobile spare parts, communications equipment, medical equipment/device, and rail transportation. It is worth mentioning that the company has developed a patented magnesium alloy die-casting parts for a variety of LED lamps.
Magontec Qinghai finished trial test of 56kt/a magnesium alloy project
Recently, Magontec Qinghai came through the trial test of 56kt/a of magnesium alloy project.
With headquarters located in New South Wales, Sydney, Australia and through M & A from Advanced Magensium, Magontec takes over the technology of Norsk Hydro’s, ranking top level in terms of magnesium alloy R & D, production and die casting technology.
It is reported that Magontec Qinghai, relying on rich magnesium resources in Golmud region and aiming to accelerate the 56kt/a of magnesium alloy production project, signs a cooperation agreement with Salt Lake Magnesium, builds two magnesium alloy production lines on the side of Salt Lake Magnesium, and directly makes magnesium alloy using magnesium from Salt Lake Magnesium. The project will greatly enhance the supply capacity of Magontec’s, and reduce the level of carbon emissions. After nearly three years of construction, the project was basically completed in early 2016. For testing production facilities and making adequate preparation for follow-up linkage production, Magontec Qinghai decided to employ outsourcing magnesium ingots as raw material to carry out heat run test. Through over 2 months’ efforts, the trial operation was concluded as expected.
Wenxi initiates Magnesium Association of Wenxi
In June 6th, magnesium producers and trading agencies in Wenxi established Magnesium Association of Wenxi. The association was founded because, in part, several waves of sharp fluctuations in magnesium market before the Spring Festival of year 2016 made many export traders incurring loss, and they hope, through joint efforts, to restrict and balance magnesium market. It is reported that, at present, more than 60% of magnesium ingot products in Shaanxi was purchased through local trading agencies.
China's magnesium exports hit a historical low in the past 27 months
According to the statistics of General Administration of Customs, from Jan. to May 2016, China's exports of magnesium products totaled 175.2kt, down 0.45% y-on-y, of which exports in May closed at 26762 tons, the new low in the last 27 months.
Among them, magnesium ingot export volume, from Jan. to May, ended at 92.3kt, down 0.2% y-on-y; magnesium alloy 51.5kt, up 10.75%; powder 27.2kt, down 24.2%; magnesium wrought 1252 tons, down 22%; and magnesium article 2.4kt, up 4.3%.
As for y-to-y change, magnesium ingot export volume, in May, was 12.6kt, down 37.3% on year-to-year basis, the new low since Feb. 2014; magnesium alloy 8.3kt, down 25%; magnesium powder 4.9kt, down 32.7%; magnesium wrought 167 tons, down 60%, and magnesium articles 554 tons, down 6.4%.

Fujikura Composites plans to start selling Magnesium air-battery to local government this summer.

Fujikura Composites plans to start selling Magnesium air-battery “WattSatt (Product name)” to local government this summer, which attracts attention as new generation battery. They succeeded in differentiating it from other products through high power function which enables five smartphones chargeable at the same time. Since Magnesium air-battery is mainly used as an emergency electricity source in case of disaster, high power capacity is a big point to be able to charge as many smart phones and shorter time as possible, by single battery. Battery capacity is 280 Wh and able to 30 smart phones full-charged after generation of electricity.
The size is 210mmW×143mmD×210mmH. The weight is 1.9kg and 3.9kg, before and after pouring water respectively. Water amount is required 2 litter and sewage is usable as well.
Furukawa battery has just released Magnesium air-battery miniature type for the home use.

Furukawa battery has started selling Magnesium air-battery “MgBOX slim” at miniature type for the home use. Developed jointly with Toppan Printing, they made existing MgBOX size compact almost in half. Having been sold as an emergency battery for local government etc. so far, space-saving was prioritized for the purpose of emergency supplies for home and office. It is reportedly storageable into A4 size shelf. Time for full charge is maximum 5 days which enables to charge maximum 20 smart phones. Usable for Radio and LED light.
The size is 210mmW×110mmD×220mmH. The weight is approx. 1kg and approx. 2.5kg, before and after pouring water respectively. Water amount is required 1.5 litter and maximum battery capacity is 200 Wh. Long storage is available guaranteed 5 years. Retail price is 17,000 yen – 18,000 yen at mail order website.

Research group of both Yuichi Ikuhara, Professor of Tokyo University and Naoya Shibata, Associate professor of Tokyo University have world’s first revealed the phenomenon that monoatomic-layer-magnesium segregated at interface of both aluminum alloy and AIN board, which strengthens interface bonding, jointly developed with Mitsubishi Materials and JEOL Ltd. Bonded interface among Aluminum, AIN metal and Ceramics is an important part of insulated circuit board for power-module mounted on hybrid automobile and EV. This result is an essential achievement to give atom-level-design-guide to proceed development of high-performance and high-reliable-insulated circuit board. Composition distribution analysis in atomic level carried out by team, resulted in elucidation that impure magnesium atom forms monoatomic-layer-structure, world’s firstly revealed. Clear picture was given that Interface of both aluminum alloy and AIN board is not a simple bonding between metal and ceramics but realization of strong bonding forming interface-transition-structure by magnesium and O atom.
This achievement gives atomic level guideline to get strong bonding between metal and ceramics and is expected to contribute greatly to future insulated circuit board R&D for power-module and its performance improvement.

Either model adopted Magnesium alloy housing and Dust and Water proof specification. Succeeding basic concept of SIGMA SD1 Merrill, both products are compatible with SIGMA dp Quattro series in both equal high image quality and compact weight-saving. Collaborating with Murata Manufacturing Co., Ltd., Masato Uehara, Senior Researcher (Sensing material research group) and Morito Akiyama Deputy Research Div. manager of “National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology (AIST)” have succeeded to make piezoelectric-performance enhanced up to the same level of scandium (Sc) by adding Magnesium and Niobium element at the same time into Aluminum nitride (AIN), which is piezoelectric material used as high-frequency-filter for mobile-communication such as smartphone. Comparing to AIN with added Sc, there is benefit to lower cost. In addition to high-frequency-filter for next generation’s mobile communication devices, utilization for piezoelectric devices is expected to support sensor network realization for IoT and Smart-manufacturing. They are planning to carry out research from now on, to make clear mechanism of performance improvement with increasing Mg and Nb added-amount and effect of other elements addition.
Domestic Magnesium Market - February, 2016

Based on Import/Export Statistics of February 2016, magnesium metal import was 1,590.2 tons (44.4% decrease from the same month of previous year), magnesium powder 252.2 tons (56.6% decrease), and other products 129.1 tons (43.9% decrease). The year-to-year basis in all of categories i.e. metal, powder and other products showed minus almost cut in half.
The metal category consisted of 1,218.6 tons of pure magnesium (42.6% decrease), 365.2 tons of die-casting alloys (49.7% decrease), both pure magnesium and magnesium alloys struggled in quantity at beginning of the year. Also 4.0 tons of high purity magnesium (4.8% decrease) and 2.4 tons of casting alloy (69.7% decrease).
The average import price of magnesium metal continued to decrease for consecutive two months starting 2016. And the average price of pure magnesium in February was 222.0 yen per kg, 20.1 yen per kg, 8.3% decrease comparing to January, which decreased down to the level of 10 years later at 227.1 yen per kg in September, 2006. The price of magnesium alloys decreased significantly down to 277.6 yen per kg , 35.5 yen per kg, 11.3% decrease on month-to-month basis.
As for the total amount of import from January to February 2016, magnesium metal was 3,622.6 tons (35.0% decrease, from the same period of previous year), magnesium powder was 686.9 tons (25.7% increase) and other products was 452.8 tons (9.3% increase). To this end, the grand total amount of import from January to February was 4,762.3 tons, 31.3% decrease year-to-year basis comparing to previous year.
In February 2016, export of magnesium consisted of 39.9 tons of magnesium alloys including 39.4 tons for US , powder was 0.0 tons and other products were 1.3 tons (82.1% decrease). The amount of export for China was shrinking down to 0.9 tons.
As for the total amount of export from January to February 2016, magnesium metal was 128.7 tons (33.4% decrease, from the same period of previous year), magnesium powder was 1.2 tons (17.1% decrease) and other products was 2.5 tons (74.2% decrease).

Domestic Magnesium Market March, 2016
Triode Corporation - Headphone enabled front-positioning without DSP (Digital Signal Processor)

On April 27th, Triode Corporation released Croszone’s headphones “CZ-1” enabling front-positioning only by acoustic technology, planned on sale in late June and suggested retail price is 250,000 yen (net). “CZ-1” sound positioning is designed fixed at front of listener as if listeners enjoy stereo source sound by speakers. Not depending on DSP technology, it realized front-positioning. Magnesium diecasting headband structure makes its shape undeformable even force applied. Without any adjustment for listener’s head size, anyone is reportedly able to get certain lateral-pressure.

At symposium “Motorsport technology and culture” organized by JSAE (Society of Automotive Engineers of Japan), Mr. Toki of SUBARU TECNICA INTERNATIONAL INC. gave a presentation explaining that intake manifold for SUBARU BRZ renewed its design completely replacing Aluminum alloy to Magnesium alloy to count on weight-saving-effect to the full. It reduced weight by half comparing to existing intake manifold and made vehicle height 30mm lower.
Magnesium Step won grand-prix award at 20th Kawasaki industrial design competition.

The result of the screening of Kawasaki Industrial Design Competition Kawasaki City organized was announced. Flip Stool (Fujimaru Design Studio) was awarded grand-prix among 101 entries submitted to “Subject : Step ladder/ Steps tool which brought out the best of Magnesium alloy characteristic” (MACRW Co.,Ltd)”.
Weight is 2.8 Kg. Not only used as step but used as storage by rotating step-part and putting it into. Usable as side table as well. MACRW Co.,Ltd says “we plan to carry on product development with additional improvement”.

- Morimura Bros., Inc. to introduce latest Magnesium products trend in Europe. Metals department of Morimura Bros. introduced the latest magnesium products and proposed products in Europe at Highly-functional Metal Expo “Metal Japan”. They predict that Magnesium diecasting parts demand would soar tremendously from now on mainly in Europe. Weight saving trend for worldwide fuel economy regulations will be follow wind. Aluminum is superior in cost viewpoint however Magnesium needs will be increased by weight advantage, they believe. Looking at Forming method besides diecasting, rolled Magnesium alloy will accelerate aircraft seat application, which is still subjected to conditions but make Magnesium structural material application expand which prioritize lighter weight rather than cost. Morimura Bros. is exclusive distributor of Magontec which has base facility in Germany and China, and of Magnesium Elektron (Great Britain). And were introducing mobile phone base station parts housing applied high thermal conductivity magnesium alloy for diecasting (Magontec) and unmanned reconnaissance plane housing produced at Magnesium Elektron, USA.
- Santoku introducing the world lightest Magnesium alloy “SanMaLia” The world lightest commercial alloy, Magnesium-Lithium alloy thin sheet “SanMaLia” has been developed. Completed development in 2008 and used commercially for Laptop housing, attache case and Biz card case etc. Cost is the key for further applications and said “We move forward to propose day-to-day life product which maximize the light weight advantage”. “SanMaLia” made it possible to bend cold, not possible on plastic nor conventional magnesium alloys. Furthermore, succeeded to decrease impurity by original casting technology to overcome the corrosion resistance which had been the weak point so far. “SanMaLia” is now able to offer the corrosion resistance equal to the conventional magnesium alloys.
- Japan Fine Steel to introduce pure magnesium audio speaker cable Exhibited audio speaker cable “SIN-KAI MS227C”. Material is 0.7mm pure magnesium wire cable. Magnesium cable weighs one fifth lighter than copper one. Magnesium shows highest damping capacity i.e. absorb vibration characteristic among all existing commercial metals. In addition, it performs good EMI characteristic at broad range of frequencies and excellent heat dissipation capacity, which meets required specification for cable. The cable structure is consisted of 0.7mm core wire surrounded by six copper wires in spiral manner and covered by insulated polyethylene surface.
- The New Industry Research Organization (NIRO) to exhibit Magnesium alloy seat frame for high speed train on experimental basis. Applied magnesium alloy is flame retardant “AZX611”, which made succeeded 20% lighter than aluminum, seat weighs approximately 2.1 kg each. Consortium members are as follows; Nochida, Kinomoto Shinsen, STU, Okuno Chemical Industries, Santoku, Hamax and Japan Fine Steel, etc.
Domestic Magnesium Market - March, 2016

Based on Import/Export Statistics of March 2016, magnesium metal import was 2,006.2 tons (12.6% decrease from the same month of previous year), magnesium powder 407.9 tons (160.9% increase), and other products 150.0 tons (109.7% increase). The year-to-year basis in powder and other products except metal showed doubled big recovery. However as for magnesium metal, there is still no clear sign of recovery.
The metal category consisted of 1,503.1 tons of pure magnesium (0.2% decrease) recovered up to almost same level of previous year. 492.7 tons of die-casting alloys (35.9% big decrease remains). While there was no high purity magnesium imported, casting alloy was regained up to 10.4tons (3.9% decrease).
The average import price of magnesium metal has been going down for two consecutive months since beginning of 2016, but the average price of pure magnesium in March turned to 225.0 yen per kg, 3.1 yen per kg, 1.4% increase comparing to February. However this average price of pure magnesium still remains low. The price of magnesium alloys was 272.5 yen per kg (5.2 yen per kg, 1.9% decrease) two consecutive months minus compared with previous month.
As for the total amount of import from January to March 2016, magnesium metal was 5,628.7 tons (28.5% decrease, from the same period of previous year), magnesium powder was 1,094.8 tons (1.3% increase) and other products was 602.8 tons (24.1% increase). Consequently the grand total amount of import from January to March regained up to 7,326.3 tons, 22.3% decrease year-to-year basis comparing to previous year.
In March 2016, export of magnesium consisted of both 2 kg of pure magnesium and 15.5 tons of magnesium alloys (86.6% decrease from the same period previous year), magnesium alloys exported to USA was 0 tons in March. Powder and granule were 30 kg and other products were 1.1 tons (12.0% increase) including 1.1 tons for China.
As for the total amount of export from January to March 2016, magnesium alloy metal was 144.2 tons (53.3% decrease, from the same period of previous year), magnesium powder was 1.2 tons (15.0% decrease) and others was 3.6 tons (66.1% decrease).
