IMA Video Promotional Opportunity

This year IMA embarked on a new Industry Promotion program geared towards increasing awareness of the Association and our wonderful material MAGNESIUM!
We have begun by rebranding the Association with a new logo, marketing banners and literature to be used and distributed at relevant industry events. We have also identified several events, both in Europe and North America, which we will attend in 2016 to continue our promotion work that started this year. One exciting event will be the 2016 Hannover Fair in Germany where we will partner with the German research institute HZG to display a car demonstrator showing where magnesium parts can be utilized in auto construction.

Consistent with our rebranding effort, the Board has also agreed to begin production on an IMA video to promote our material and the Association. Our key messaging in the video will be:

"Magnesium is an extremely abundant metal with tremendous light weighting properties, an environmentally friendly material fully recyclable, and with the same processing versatility as other non-ferrous metals."

Key Market Sectors and Products we would like to feature in the video are as follows:

December CRM Alliance/ EU Policy Newsletter

  • EIT Raw Materials 3rd Annual Conference
  • Ad-Hoc Working Group on Raw Materials (DG Grow)
  • Raw Materials in Horizon 2020 WP 2016-2017
  • Circular economy package
  • CRM Alliance up-date

EIT Raw Material 3rd Annual Conference
The Conference was the first one with the final elected EIT RM board members, the CRM Alliance met already this year with the interim leadership team.
The conference attracted 350 people and gave an outlook of future EU policy for enhancing raw materials in the complete vlaue chain and focusing on a circular economy. Proceedings are available shortly. As a fact, it was also confirmed that the EU Juncker plan is now also available to "EU associated countries" as long as one project consortium is located in the EU-28 zone.

Ad-Hoc Working Group on Raw Materials
The meeting was organized by DG Grow to present and finalise the status of the CRM methodology assessment, performed by the Joint Research Center (JRC) and reviewed by DG Grow. The meeting was attended by several Associations(Eurometaux, Euromines, Industrial Minerals, Cobalt Development Institute and the CRM Alliance.

Both main criteria of CRM assessment (Supply risk and Economic importance) have undergone significant changes, and following DG Grow, substitution has less impact than in the 2010 and 2014 list.

DG Grow: "No relation between CRM and substitution. If anything, being a CRM, mining opportunities in the EU should be fostered."

The general scope is:

  • risk of a disruption in supply of a specific material (supply mix, national stability, substitutes)
  • relevance (consequence) of a disruption: economic importance (value) of the materials
  • alternatives, resilience, ability to adapt to disruption or mitigate risk
  • consequences (new mining, recycling, substitution
Additional dimensions proposed by the CRM Alliance such as "CO2 import into Europe - e.g. import Mg from China" and "looking into "greener" primary scenarios will not be adopted into the "CRM snapshot" type of report.

A further dimension will be international trade agreements. The CRM Alliance will have a meeting with the new lead consultants performing the actual review of the CRM list.

Raw Materials in Horizon 2020 WP 2016-2017
A wide and heterogeneous set of policies is labelled as "demand side innovation policy", since the definition of the concept is still controversial both in the academic literature and among practitioners. Complete overview

Circular Economy Package
The European Commission adopted an ambitious Circular Economy Package which includes revised legislative proposals on waste to stimulate Europe's transition towards a circular economy which will boost global competitiveness, foster sustainable economic growth and generate new jobs.

  • Savings of €600 billion for EU businesses, equivalent to 8% of their annual turnover
  • Creation of 580,000 jobs
  • Reduction of EU carbon emissions by 450 million tons per year

The Commission will take a series of actions to encourage recovery of critical raw materials, and prepare a report including best practices and options for further action. The Commission is also encouraging action by Member States on this topic in its revised proposals on waste.

  • Report on critical raw materials and the circular economy - by 2017
  • Sharing of best practice for the recovery of critical raw materials from mining waste and landfills-by 2017

Most of the circular economy business models still need raw materials feed into the system. Raw Materials and as a consequence CRMs will continue to play an important role in supporting the above targets.

Domestic Magnesium Market November, 2015

Yonex, the world's first snowboard with a magnesium alloy
(Source: "Yonex Website", 25th Sept., 2015)

Yonex Co., Ltd. started to sell two brand new carbon snowboards, SLR (Short Length Radius) and LLR (Long Length Radius) of "THE C" series for alpine athletes.
The stability of the snowboard on high speed runway is the key of win-or-lose in alpine games in which a very close time to one hundredth a second is competed after sliding down the course with high speed turns.

"THE C" series is the world's first use of magnesium alloy as the snowboards in order to enhance the stability. Magnesium is the lightest in the practical metals, and has the highest relative strength and the highest vibration damping property. To combine this magnesium reduces the vibration during snowboarding to the lowest level without impairing the lightweight by combined carbon. It enables stable high speed snowboarding without flip-flop of the board.

Furukawa Battery and Toppan, co-development of magnesium-air battery for a general household
(Source: "Keikinzoku Tsushin", 25th Dec., 2015)

Furukawa Battery Co., Ltd. and Toppan Printing Co., Ltd. announced they had jointly developed the small and space-saving emergency magnesium-air battery "MgBox slim" for a general household and started to sell them. They had reduced the size to half of the previous model to enable keeping it in a narrow space.

The advantage of "MgBox Slim" is that electrical power can be generated by only pouring water or seawater, and is suitable for charging up devices with USB terminals such as smart-phones. It has one USB port which can charge up large capacity smart-phones maximum 20 times. It is the world's first magnesium-air battery made of paper package, and it is the environment-friendliness battery that does not make any noises and does not put carbon dioxide into the atmosphere during generating electrical power. The size is W120xD110xH220mm, and the weight is about 1.0kg (before pouring the water, after pouring the water about 2.5kg).

The maximum period of electrical power generating is 5 days, and the maximum electrical power capacity is 200Wh. They desire to sell them to local governments, companies and organizations and a general household for disaster prevention stocks.

Fuji Light Metal, asks a meister about dissimilar alloy welding
(Source: "Nikkan Kogyo Shinbun, online version", 22nd Dec., 2015)

"The important thing is that to get one's wings without any fear of failure", said Hisanori Yonezaki. He is a so-called "Meister of welding for dissimilar alloys". He is in charge of a processing line in Fuji Light Metal Co., Ltd.

The processing line operated by Mr. Yonezaki is specialized in "KUMADAI magnesium alloy" developed by Kumamoto University. He makes analyses of new materials which are being studied, searches welding conditions, and takes strength tests for commercialization of products. Moreover he is involved in commercialization of its applications. He did welding of forks which support the front wheels of "Wheel chair for track and field sports" made of KUMADAI heat-resistant magnesium alloy. Mr. Yonezaki had taken charge of extrusion of aluminum. He has used his skills in the new field to utilize his ability for welding of steels and aluminum when the company has participated in the magnesium business.
