|2011 IMA Awards of Excellence|
The International Magnesium Association (IMA) awarded innovative designers and engineers in the 2010 Awards of Excellence competition. The awards were announced at the 68th Annual World Magnesium Conference held in Prague, Czech Republic in May. The Awards of Excellence competition was open to all companies demonstrating outstanding examples of magnesium's use as well as magnesium products and manufacturing technologies in three categories: Design, Process and Application.
The Design Class encompassed two categories: Cast Products and Wrought Products. The two design categories recognize unique, novel, and creative design and development of magnesium applications, and exhibit a significant advance over current practice. First Place for Design Automotive Cast Product was awarded to Georg Fischer GmbH & Co., Altenmarkt, Austria for their Porsche G1 & E2 Engine Front Cover. The front cover only weighs 2.14 kg and yields an approximate 45% weight reduction from the aluminum component it replaced. First Place for Design — Cast Product — Commercial (Non-automotive) was awarded to Precise Cast, Commerce City, Colorado, USA for the Vacuum Cleaner Head Casting. The use of the thin walled magnesium casting (AZ91D) reduced the number of parts required (4 parts in polycarbonate ABS versions) thus also reducing assembly costs and stocking & reordering costs as well.
The Application Category recognizes significant advances resulting in a large volume potential for magnesium. In some cases, the products, processes, and technology must be in commercial practice and be successful. First Place for Application was awarded to Dometic LLC, La Grange, Indiana, USA for their Cover & Rail for Recreational Vehicle Awning. Utilizing extrusions in AZCom Alloy significant weight savings were realized over aluminum while still meeting the significant criteria for type of product within the European market.
There were no awards presented this year in the Process nor Design-Wrought Product Categories.
