The International Magnesium Association announced the Awards of Excellence at the 63rd Annual World Magnesium Conference in Beijing, China in May. The event was open to all companies demonstrating outstanding examples of magnesium's use. The awards recognized outstanding examples of magnesium products and manufacturing technologies in three categories, Design, Process, and Application.
The Design Class encompassed two categories: Cast Products, which included automotive and commercial (nonautomotive) applications, and Wrought Products. The two design categories recognize unique, novel, and creative design and development of magnesium applications, and demonstrated a significant advance over current practice.
First Place for Design Cast Product, Automotive was awarded to DaimlerChrysler Corporation in Detroit, Michigan for a magnesium spare tire module.
First Place for Design Cast Product, Commercial was awarded to Lunt Manufacturing Company, Inc. in Schaumburg, Illinois and MTD Southwest, Inc. in Tempe, Arizona for a four-stroke engine crankcase housing used in a string trimmer.
First Place for Design Wrought Product was awarded to Shanxi Wenxi Yinguang Magnesium Industry Group in Shanxi, China for their large scale magnesium alloy rod billets and plate blanks by continuous casting process.
First Place in the Process Category, which recognizes innovation in manufacturing or processing technology leading to higher quality and reduced costs, was awarded to Ing. Rauch Fertigungstechnik GmbH for fluxless recycling of magnesium and liquid magnesium transport.
First Place in the Application Category, which recognizes significant advances resulting on a large volume potential for magnesium, was awarded to Meridian Technologies, Inc. in Plymouth, Michigan for an AE44 magnesium engine cradle for a Corvette Z06.
The 2007 Awards of Excellence will be held in conjunction with the 64th Annual World Magnesium Conference, May 13 through 15, 2007 in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. A Call for Entries will be distributed in January. For more information visit IMA's website at www.intlmag.org.
