IMA Announces New Virtual Demonstrator for Automotive Products

Saint Paul, Minnesota (3 March 2020) – The International Magnesium Association (IMA) recently launched their 3D Magnesium Automotive Applications Demonstrator. The new animated “on-screen” version of an automotive demonstrator provides an interactive tool for visualizing magnesium parts used in serial production.

The demonstrator is open to the public to explore and utilize, showcasing the value of magnesium in light weighting and utilization throughout vehicle production, from structural to BIW (body-in-white) parts and transmission to interior applications.

As automakers strive to improve fuel efficiency and improve performance by reducing overall vehicle weight, the use of lightweight magnesium parts in vehicles is increasing. Currently, models in production use between 5kg and 30kg in magnesium parts. Given that magnesium is 33% lighter than aluminum and 75% lighter than steel, there is significantly more potential for lightweight magnesium applications across a broad range of product types.
