In order to bring forward research in the field of Magnesium and its alloys, Helmholtz-Zentrum Geesthacht (HZG) created the HZG Magnesium Research Award in 2007. The aim of the HZG Magnesium Research Award is to honor innovative work by an individual researcher in the area of the science and technology of magnesium alloys. The award is donated with 5,000 Euro and is attributed bi-annually.

Priv. Doz. Dr. Jiehua Li was nominated for the HZG Award for his landmark research in the field of “Atomic scale characterization of the solute clustering and precipitation during the early stage of magnesium alloys containing rare earth elements.”

HZG Mg Research Award

The Magnesium Research Award was presented to the recipient by the chairman of the Jury and Director of the Magensium Innovation Centre, Prof. Karl Ulrich Kainer (Helmholtz-Zentrum Geesthacht) at the 6th Int. Conference on Magnesium in Shenyang on 25th September 2017.

Priv. Doz. Dr. Jiehua Li graduated at the Northwestern Polytechnical University, Xian, China in 2006 in Materials Processing (MSc). In March 2010, he received his Ph.D. in Materials Processing at Northwestern Polytechnical University, Xian, China. From 2010 to 2014, he worked as university assistant at the Montanuniversität Leoben, Austria. In July 2014, he received a permeant academic position as Senior Lecturer at the Montanuniversität Leoben, Austria. In September 2015, he achieved his habilitation in the field of foundry technology at the Montanuniversität Leoben, Austria.

Priv. Doz. Dr. Jiehua Li and his research partners at the Montanuniversität Leoben have employed advanced transmission electron microscopy and atom probe tomography to elucidate the solute clustering and precipitation sequences as well as the partitioning behavior of solutes into precipitates in advanced magnesium alloys. His pioneering work on Mg-Nd-Gd(Y)-Zn-Zr magnesium alloys have identified the relevant processing steps for these types of alloy systems to obtain maximum strength at satisfactory ductility. His fundamental work on the precipitation in Mg alloys is aimed to improve the application of Mg alloys in the automotive and aerospace industry.
