IMA Member Twin City Die Castings joins GM, Ford and 3M in plans to retool to make ventilators for healthcare workers

GM and Ford have dedicated production expertise to build ventilators to help the COVID-19 recovery process. To that end, they require parts from suppliers, like Twin City Die Casting to respond to the increased demand for typically low volume components. For more information please refer to the following articles:

IMA's Magnesium Automotive Applications Demonstrator

IMA's automotive demonstrator provides an interactive tool for visualizing magnesium parts used in serial production. As automakers strive to improve fuel efficiency and improve performance by reducing overall vehicle weight, the use of lightweight magnesium parts in vehicles is increasing. Currently, models in production use between 5kg and 30kg in magnesium parts. Given that magnesium is 33% lighter than aluminum and 75% lighter than steel, there is significantly more potential for lightweight magnesium applications across a broad range of product types.

The demonstrator was recently featured in SpotLightMetal.

IMA Exhibits at TMS2020

The International Magnesium Association exhibited at the TMS event in San Diego, Feb 24-26. In addition to IMA Americas Representative Paul Uguccioni, the booth was manned by volunteers from IMA member companies Magretech and Allite.

A number of current and former IMA members and directors were in attendance. It was a great to see them and to share in their conference experiences. The IMA booth was frequented by a number of enthusiastic magnesium information seekers; including students, academic leaders and users. IMA had just announced the suspension of registration for the Fukuoka conference resulting in a number of inquiries as to the expected outcome for the conference; all of which were referred to our website.

More than 4,600 attendees and 80 exhibiting companies came together at the TMS 2020 Annual Meeting & Exhibition. COVID-19 had only a minor effect on magnesium and resulted in the cancellation of one magnesium keynote paper the morning of the 24th. In terms of magnesium research, there were five (5) sessions:

  • Biodegradable Materials for Medical Applications II — Magnesium Implants
  • Magnesium Technology 2020 — Keynote Session
  • Magnesium Technology 2020 — Alloy Development
  • Magnesium Technology 2020 — Alloy Design and Solidification
  • Magnesium Technology 2020 — Thermomechanical Processing

There were other sessions in the Light Metal Sections including Al alloying, Electrometallurgy, Mechanical and Structural reliability, to name a few.

Overall, the interest in Magnesium was high, providing the opening to discuss what IMA membership can offer its members in all categories.

WerkstoffPlus Auto 2020 Provides Video Featuring Participating Exhibits

The International Magnesium Association (IMA) participated in WerkstoffPlus Auto 2020, 19-20 February, in Stuttgart, Germany. Interviews were conducted on the showroom floor of each participating exhibitor. The interview with IMA European Committee Chair Martin Tauber at the IMA display is at video sequence 17:40 - 20:46.

The video is in German, courtesy of Ausstellerrundgang HQ.

IMA Is Official Partner of LightCon

The German LightCon will be a platform for all lightweight construction solutions - for competing materials and processes, as well as for hybrid solutions and lightweight construction. The new congress fair sees itself as a marketplace for the competition as well as a high-quality contact exchange for forging new ideas, partnerships and networks.

German Federal Minister of Economics Peter Altmaier is the patron of LightCon. Other partners of the congress fair are Berlin Partner, C³ carbon concrete composite, the Federal Association of the German Foundry Industry, the Industrial Association of Solid Forming, the International Magnesium Association, the Lightweight Construction Interest Group (igeL), the Landshut Lightweight Construction Cluster, the VDEh Steel Association, Mobility goes Additive, that Cluster NanoMikroWerkstoffePhotonik.NRW, Neue Materials Fürth GmbH as well as the clusters Nanotechnologie and Neue Werkstoffe (bayern innovativ).
