IMA Board Meeting with Chinese Magnesium Industry Leaders

The IMA Board hosted a successful dinner meeting with key Chinese magnesium industry leaders. Approximately 50 individuals attended the dinner meeting including over 30 Chinese guests at the Donghu Hotel in Shanghai, China. IMA was honored to see such a positive response from the Chinese companies.

IMA President Todd Olson and IMA Board Member Ronald Chang welcomed the honored guests. They provided a brief overview presentation of IMA and expressed IMA’s desire to build friendships and improve communications with Chinese magnesium industry leaders. Following the formal remarks, the group enjoyed a traditional Chinese meal, along with many rounds of toasts and introductions.

The dinner was a great event marking a renewed commitment from the IMA Board of Directors to engage with Chinese leaders and welcome them to become part of the IMA community. With the 77th Annual IMA World Magnesium Conference scheduled for 13-15 May 2020 in Fukuoka, Japan, IMA extended a warm welcome to the Chinese leaders to attend the conference. IMA is planning to create special opportunities for Chinese attendees to meet board members and enjoy their hospitality.

IMA Board Meeting in Fukuoka Japan

The IMA Board of Directors met at the site of the 2020 IMA World Magnesium Conference - the Hilton Fukuoka Sea Hawk in Fukuoka, Japan, a beautiful property overlooking the harbor. The city of Fukuoka is a welcoming destination with warm, friendly people.

The board engaged in a two-day strategic planning session and held a regular business meeting. During the strategic planning session, the board identified the following key priorities:

  1. Increase participation and membership from Chinese companies and leaders.
  2. Improve marketing efforts to enhance IMA’s visibility as a leader on magnesium to attract new members.
  3. Expand IMA’s capacity to deliver timely information about the magnesium industry.
  4. Explore options for improving the annual conference program and session offerings.
  5. Make continued improvements to IMA’s operations and governance structure.
  6. Continue to focus on growing IMA’s membership and member engagement.

In addition to the strategic planning session, the board discussed the following:

  1. The board renewed the contract with Ewald Consulting to provide association management services.
  2. The board approved the European Committee’s request for an updated Life Cycle Analysis Study. (Thank you to all the companies willing to help fund the study.)
  3. The Board reviewed a set of proposed bylaws changes that are intended to modernize and update the bylaws. Additionally, the proposed bylaws will update the board governance structure to reduce the size of the board and realign the executive committee in support of the board. A special meeting of the membership will be scheduled to review the bylaws and vote to approve the recommended changes.
  4. The Board appointed the 2020 IMA World Conference Planning Committee and shared their excitement about the conference location and ideas for fresh new content.
  5. The IMA Safety Committee updated the board on the new incident reporting process and the updates to the IMA Safe Magnesium brochure. IMA remains committed to improving industry safety and sharing best practices.
  6. The Americas and European Committees provided updates on their effort to engage with members and promote the magnesium industry in their regions.

The IMA Board of Directors is looking forward to seeing everyone in Fukuoka in May 2020.
