Safety: Benefit from Practices Developed and Endorsed by Industry Experts

As President, my vision for the IMA is to have a unified organization that promotes the use of this light-weight, versatile metal throughout the world. We are a diverse organization with members from numerous industries and almost all continents. While the diversity of our members results in a variety of priorities, there is one objective that all members can wholeheartedly support and benefit from -- promoting the safe use and handling of magnesium. Any time there is a safety-related incident, it not only affects the company or facility where the incident took place, but it also has an adverse effect on the image of the material as a whole. While at times our members are competitors, we can all benefit from practices that incorporate best-practices developed and endorsed by industry experts.

To help facilitate this effort, IMA has created an international safety committee, chaired by Rick McQuary of Mag Specialties. The committee will spearhead this initiative, which includes the launch of an anonymous reporting system for incidents and near misses. The intent is for every member to learn from each other. I encourage all of our members to participate in this effort to help make our industry safer for members and customers worldwide. We expect the system to be functional in the next quarter.

IMA Webinar: Global Magnesium Market
Update with Focus on China-based
Primary Production

Your Preview to the 2019 IMA World Magnesium Conference in Budapest.

The trajectory of the global primary magnesium market continues to be linked to the fundamentals of China’s supply demand balance and the impact on global metal flow of trade barriers. This webinar will present current trends in China’s primary magnesium production base, including an update on regional production, utilization rates, cost drivers, profitability, new capacity, technology developments, as well as a discussion about China’s recent environmental clampdown and its impact on magnesium production. We’ll also take a look at some new magnesium application developments.

The webinar will conclude by looking at the potential for new primary production capacity outside China, our views about how it might evolve and what the impact might be on the global market.

IMA Participates in 15th International Aluminium Recycling Congress
(Colmar-France, 26-27 February 2019)

Around 160 people, including IMA's Christian Payn, attended this event which was well organized with panel discussions following presentations.

IMA at Alumionum Congress

The interest of IMA has been expressed at the beginning of the Congress as follows:

“Sorting Magnesium based alloys from Aluminium based alloys in ELV scraps will lower the melt loss and reduce the “demagging” process of the sorted Aluminium scraps for Aluminium refiners and will allow the recovery of Magnesium alloys contributing to a real circular economy.”

The main information has been that there will be, in the next years, too much ELV scraps in Europe to be absorbed by Aluminium refiners (alloys or castings) due to the following factors:

  • China has already reduced drastically its scrap imports for “environmental” reason and will probably stop the imports by mid 2020. By the way, China controls the scraps market.
  • The main market for the US Aluminium scraps exports was China (70% in 2012, 34% in 2018). More US scraps are exported to the EU and more scraps are coming from shredded cars
  • Electrical vehicle need less Aluminium casting parts (50% of Electrical vehicle in 2044)

To face this situation, the European Aluminium industry will have to improve the scraps selection (alloys sorting) and find new applications for these scraps (new alloys…).

LIBS (Laser induced breakdown spectroscopy) is not yet industrial for aluminium alloys sorting. The Aluminium industry will very likely push this technology, which could be an opportunity for the Magnesium industry to recover Magnesium based alloys from ELV shredded scraps.

Another concern is the recycling of electrical vehicle, which will need specific treatment (shredding is inappropriate).

The lack of interest from Automotive OEM for taking care of recyclability in vehicle design has also been pointed out.

IMA will have to stay in contact with the Aluminium industry in order to develop, if possible, synergies between the two materials (Magnesium and Aluminium).

Safe Magnesium

The flammability of magnesium alloys, and associated fire hazards with its use, are often exaggerated.
