President's Corner

By Todd Olson, IMA President

I am returning from the Detroit Auto show and I am convinced that the future is bright for magnesium.

The worldwide automotive market will continue to grow for the near future. Light weighting efforts will continue as fuel economy will continue to improve, whether it’s driven by fuel prices or a reduction in the carbon footprint. Electric and hybrid vehicles will continue to gain market share, which will bring opportunities for magnesium to offset the weight of the batteries. Body panels, electronic housings, structural and interior parts will all see increased opportunities for magnesium use.

The IMA can help drive the use of magnesium by helping educate engineers on the designing in magnesium, by helping prove the material is safe along with the supply being reliable and cost effective. Stable, safe processes and handling of material along with a supply chain that reliably supply product in a cost effective manner will be keys to our future success.

I invite our members to get active in our committees that help advance our industry. Our newly activated Safety Committee will help develop and share best practices to make our industry safer. Our Americas’ and European Committees are active in marketing the wonders of magnesium and helping end users design products that utilize the many benefits of the material.

The World Magnesium Conference May 15th - 17th in Budapest, Hungary will be an excellent forum for all of us to learn where the industry is heading and to connect with the leaders who set the course. Magnesium’s future is bright and it is up to us to make sure ours is too!

Call for 2019 Awards of Excellence &
Environmental Responsibility Award Entries

The International Magnesium Association (IMA) annually honors several organizations through its awards program. The IMA awards program features the Awards of Excellence and Environmental Responsibility Award.

Deadline to enter is Friday, February 22, 2019.

Awards of Excellence
The Showcase for Magnesium Products & Technology
Receive international and industry-wide recognition for your accomplishments. The IMA Awards of Excellence are a wonderful opportunity for participants in the magnesium industry to showcase outstanding magnesium products and innovative manufacturing technologies. A popular tradition now in its 57th consecutive year, the annual program is open to all companies demonstrating outstanding examples of magnesium's use. Nominations are judged by a peer review panel of international experts. Winners are recognized worldwide and receive considerable publicity throughout IMA and the metals industry.

Environmental Responsibility Award
The IMA International Environmental Responsibility Award was created to recognize companies that are playing an active role in reducing the magnesium industry's carbon footprint and that exemplify the industry's commitment to environmental responsibility. The Award is open to all companies within the global magnesium industry.

Please visit the IMA Awards web page for more information and to submit your entry.

The 2019 winning entries will be recognized during the 76th Annual IMA World Magnesium Conference, May 15-17, 2019 in Budapest, Hungary. Winners will receive plaques and have their entry prominently displayed throughout the conference.

IMA Safety Committee

In January the IMA international safety committee convened for the first time since its initiation by the Executive Committee and Board of Directors.  The committee has three primary objectives:

  1. Promote the Safety awareness of Magnesium across all industries.
  2. Develop processes and procedures to gather and communicate safety information.
  3. Develop materials for clearly communicating accurate safety information.

The committee began by reviewing the most recent safety brochure created by IMA.  They suggested that it be more widely distributed to all members.  More details on this will be presented in future newsletters.

The committee also reviewed a draft of an incident reporting system proposed by the IMA European committee.  The idea is to gather industry data with the purpose to share lessons learned and promote improvements within our industry.  The draft was modeled around similar reporting systems in other metals industries and the committee hopes to finalize something in the next meeting.

The committee welcomes additional participants!
If interested, please contact committee Chairman Rick McQueary at rmcqueary@magspecialtiesinc.com
