IMA: One Worldwide Voice for Magnesium

The International Magnesium Association (IMA) is a very diverse organization. We have members from many different industries and all continents (except Antarctica). While a die caster in Germany may have different priorities than a primary producer in China, we can all agree on one vision: to increase the use of magnesium. All of our members believe in the many positives of this abundant and light material. IMA is an excellent tool to promote and educate potential users on the advantages of the material. We can help offer solutions to build a lighter vehicle, a better medical device, anodes to stop corrosion, pyrotechnics, or aid in the alloying of other metals.

When we gather this May in Budapest for our World Magnesium Conference, we will learn about new processes to advance the use of magnesium as well as gain other valuable knowledge. We will see presentations that help us understand the markets better, access the outlook for raw material production, and most importantly, rekindle old relationships and make new ones. We will also meet in committees to discuss how we can promote the safe use of the material and market the benefits to more users. I encourage all of you to become more active in IMA and join one of our committees. Please contact Ralph Gervasi to find out how you can become more active and help the industry and your business grow.

I hope to see you all May 15-17 in Budapest.

IMA Took Stage at the DERA Magnesium Industry Workshop in Germany

(left to right: Matthias Gruber/Magontec, Martin Schmitz/DERA, Stephan Steinacker/Almamet, Peter Buchholz/DERA, Martin Tauber/IMA, Hartmut Fischer/Stihl.

The German Raw Material Institute Deutsche Rohstoffagentur (DERA) called for a magnesium industry workshop to Berlin on 23rd of January. Around 40 participants from government, OEMs, Tier 1-2 companies and R&D institutes joined the DERA team.

IMA was represented with 5 European members, and Martin Tauber, Chairman of the European Committee gave a presentation about the global magnesium market and future expectations. Matthias Gruber from Magontec presented the current status of the ambitus Qinghai primary magnesium project and also explained the history of magnesium primary processing technology development.

The central topic was to have an up-dated view on the raw material dependence of Germany towards Chinese magnesium, and to identify the pipeline of Non-China production outlets or environmental advantages processes like the electrolytic technology used in Qinghai, claiming an CO2 footprint which is only 20 – 25% of BAT in China pidgeon plants.

Other presentations and interesting discussion were held around magnesium as light-weight contribution to future automotive applications and also about its relevance for resource efficiency particularly in recycling.

Generally, it was agreed that Magnesium needs substantially more marketing and promotion to all stakeholders, by showcasing excellent magnesium applications and link the unique properties of magnesium to future concepts, where light-weighting is required.

DERA also introduced a comprehensive Raw Material Study which is currently under review and targeted to be published mid of the year. Most of the presentations are available via the DERA website.
