Magnesium News Header

Greetings from the Newly Appointed Americas Representative

As you can discern from the title there is a new position that has been created by IMA to support the members in the Americas.  A primary objective of this position is to provide a point of contact for members. Specifically, someone who can be available to members to receive: suggestions of potential new members, new IMA activities to be considered, feedback and general concerns.

My name is Paul Uguccioni and I have been selected to serve in this capacity. Prior to my retirement from Opta Minerals, September 2018, I had been an active member of IMA for more than ten years and served on the Board of Directors for several years. As a member, particularly in the early days, it was difficult to associate names or faces to the International Magnesium Association. I hope to change that by bringing visibility to the membership in the Americas; either through this newsletter, phone calls, personal visits or via email. To that end, I have set up a dedicated email address  Please reach out via email when you have an opportunity. I have plans to make contact with all of you in the future.

IMA Webinar:
Magnesium Sheet Technology

Over the last ten years there has been a renewed interest in magnesium sheet for a wide range of technically advanced applications. This was initially driven by reduction in fuel consumption across the transportation sectors and is now lead by consumer electronic housings, electrification of vehicles to gain range, and space/military applications. The new manufacturing and alloy technologies being considered by these sectors are supported by a foundation of legacy applications in the industry that provide a commercial bedrock for the manufacture of the material. This webinar session will cover recent developments in the manufacturing technologies of magnesium sheet and the new alloys associated with them. It will also provide insight to the state of the art in commercial magnesium industry.

Date: Wednesday, June 26, 2019
Time: 10:00-11:00 am USA, Central Daylight Time (GMT -5.00),

IMA Visits HKS Metals
Scrap Yards in Netherlands

Following a contact during the International Aluminium Recycling Congress end of last February, a visit to HKS Metals Scraps Yards in Netherlands was organized for April 12, 2019.

The purpose of the visit was to better understand the End of Life Vehicle (ELV) Recycling processes and where the Magnesium-based alloys can be found in the recycled product(s).

Those taking part in the visit for IMA were:

  • Ken White, AMACOR
  • Christian Röhling, MAGONTEC
  • Martin Tauber, IMA
  • Chrisitan Payn, IMA

European Car of the Year Carries Magnesium Cross Car Beam

A jury of European motor journalists awarded the new Jaguar I-Pace as car of the year in 2019. As range is one of the today’s main performance criteria, lightweight parts made from magnesium are the right solution.

“Jaguar has simultaneously satisfied a demand for renewed SUVs and the next need of more zero-emission cars, especially if they are as appealing and practical for day-to-day use as this one,” stated the organizer of the awards. Today’s consumers are ranking the range as very important, and lightweight is an essential part to achieve that. Magnesium as the lightest structural metal is a perfect solution for this. As Magnesium parts are have been frequently used for many decades, the main common parts also find their way into the new fully electric platforms.

The new Jaguar I-Pace carries a Magnesium Cross Car Beam as a center part for the interior structure. With a width of almost 1,5m, the part only weighs 4,6 kg and is made of a Standard Magnesium Alloy AM60. The focus of this component was on maintaining and extending its stiffness in order to support driving performance even at a vehicle weight of approx. 2.200 kg – 400 hp and an acceleration of 4,8s to 60mph. A Cross Car Beam made of Magnesium is not only lighter in weight, but also combines several parts into only one piece made by die-casting technology with almost no further machining work required.

With the ambitious targets of European OEMs for transforming the current vehicle fleet, lightweighting will remain a factor of success, and the International Magnesium Association (IMA) foresees a bright future for Magnesium parts not only in transferring existing technologies to EVs, but also in developing tailor-made solutions to improve the performance of the car and the battery system.

Safe Magnesium

The flammability of magnesium alloys, and associated fire hazards with its use, are often exaggerated.
