President's Corner

By Todd Olson, IMA President

The 2018 World Conference in New Orleans was a milestone event celebrating IMA’s 75th anniversary. While some Visa issues caused attendance to be lower than the previous conference in Singapore, the overwhelming feedback to those in attendance was that the conference was ranked as one of the best in recent memory. The event was held at the Monteleone Hotel, in New Orleans, which scored high marks by conference goers.  Attendees were treated to a city rich in history with great food and great entertainment. The keynote session by Bob Brown reciting the history of IMA and magnesium use in the last century and was a delightful walk through our industry’s past. Other well received presentations included Alan Clark’s Global Magnesium Supply and Demand, Roberval Brito sharing the technology behind a magnesium light aircraft engine, two updates on new Canadian primary production plants, and many more too numerous to list. The event ended on a high note with a gala dinner celebrating IMA’s 75th anniversary.

In September, IMA held our Fall board meeting in Budapest, the site of the upcoming 76th IMA World Magnesium Conference. The city was beautiful and welcoming. Our host hotel, the Kempinski Corvinus, is a wonderful venue in a central location within easy walking distance to many of the magnificent sights of the city. The scenic riverfront, local markets, and a vast array of restaurants impressed the meeting attendees alike.

I look forward to seeing you on 15-17 May 2019 at the 76th Annual IMA World Magnesium Conference.  I guarantee it will be a memorable and enlightening event.  In the span of a few days, you will network with industry leaders, gain exclusive access into market trends, and get early insight on the leading technology within the industry.  I can’t wait!

IMA at Aluminum 2018

9-11 October 2018, Düsseldorf - Aluminum fair is organized every two years in Europe. Magnesium is the main alloying element for Aluminum and is also in competition with for light weighting applications. The presence of IMA at this fair was important and has been facilitated by the co-operation with EFM. The IMA booth was located between the Magontec booth and the TU Berlin booth, which delimited an IMA area. EFM members were installed just in front of IMA. IMA and EFM locations were called the Magnesium area.

The two first days were relatively busy. The third day was more quiet. We have had around 25 contacts with different interests (extrusion, corrosion, recycling, magnesium supply …). Extrusion has been the main interest confirmed by the significant attendance at TU Berlin booth. Magontec booth has also been well visited. Following the fair, nine e-mails about the Budapest Conference, Call for Abstracts and IMA membership have been sent.

European Committee meeting attached to Mg Symposium in Birmingham

Magnesium, tantalum, silicon: various industries are crazy about these metals used to build cars, solar panels and computers. As demand booms, the reserves are declining. Since 2011, the European Commission has been committed to publish a list of the most critical raw materials – there are 27 materials listed today.

Fly In Safety

In civil and military aviation, critical raw materials allow for the design of safer lightweight aircrafts that are also quieter and less polluting. In engines, cobalt, tantalum and tungsten are prized for their heat and corrosion resistance. Magnesium-based super-alloys can be found in the cabin. Coveted for being lightweight, they reduce fuel consumption. In the cockpit, the instruments for flight monitoring and pilot assistance function thanks to the electro-optical properties of neodymium and yttrium.

Smartphones possess multiple features that would not exist without critical raw materials. For example, indium enables your screens to be tactile. The performance of the microphone and loudspeaker relies on magnets (a mixture of iron, boron and neodymium). Tantalum and silicon are the perfect allies for electronic chips. Be it metal (magnesium alloy) or plastic, the casing of your device contains a rechargeable battery made of eight grams of cobalt.
