Pure Magnesium From China – FTC Determination

On the basis of the record [1] developed in the subject five-year review, the United States International Trade Commission (“Commission”) determines, pursuant to the Tariff Act of 1930 (“the Act”), that revocation of the antidumping duty order on pure magnesium from China would likely to lead continuation or recurrence of material injury to an industry in the United States within a reasonably foreseeable time.

The Commission, pursuant to section 751(c) of the Act (19 U.S.C. 1675(c)), instituted this review on October 3, 2016 (81 FR 67697) and determined on January 6, 2017, that it would conduct an expedited review (82 FR 9596, February 7, 2017).

The Commission made this determination pursuant to section 751(c) of the Act (19 U.S.C. 1675(c)). It completed and filed its determination in this review on March 29, 2017. The views of the Commission are contained in USITC Publication 4678 (March 2017), entitled Pure magnesium from China: Investigation No. 731-TA-696 (Fourth Review).

By order of the Commission.
Issued: April 5, 2017.
Lisa R. Barton,
Secretary to the Commission.

Jo Willekens
December 1, 1943 – March 26, 2017

Jo Willekens died on March 26, 2017 in Brussels, Belgium. His son, Tom sent out a notice to many in the light metals industry where Jo was a mainstay, having worked in both aluminum and magnesium. Jo went into the hospital for a medical checkup and developed a low-grade pneumonia which worsened overnight. Jo died on Sunday morning with his family close by.

He started work in the European light metals industry, first working for Alcan and later for Hydro Aluminum. He was promoted to a new position when Hydro Magnesium opened their main office in Brussels.. Jo was promoted to Director of Market Development for Hydro Magnesium. Reporting directly to the Vice President of Marketing, Bob Edgar. They had developed a close relationship as Jo used his background to help the group develop magnesium on a worldwide basis. Bob Edgar said , “Jo was a wonderful combination of optimism, enthusiasm, energy and good humor, while being technically very competent.”

For a time Jo was elevated to be the European Representative of the International Magnesium Association. His son Tom says that his dad retired from the IMA job in 2012 at age 68. Jo then was able to spend a lot of time with the family. His grandchildren, Joppe, Janne & Jakob got his full attention. They adored him and visa versa. Tom went on to say, “ Although he was retired I think there was still magnesium in his blood. He kept close contact with his latest business partners and also met them on some occasions.

Jo is survived by his wife, Valentine Van Gompel, Son Tom and family, daughter Inneke Willekens. Obituary.
