Profile:
The Magnesium Innovation Centre (MagIC) is part of the GKSS Research Centre (a member of the Helmholtz Association of German Research Centres). MagIC develops and characterizes new Magnesium cast and wrought alloys. This work is performed by an international team of highly skilled scientists which support all users with regard to the entire time of life of magnesium products from their alloy design over the processing route until the end of life of magnesium components regarding recycling. Additionally, there are close connections to the different clusters of magnesium research within Germany, Europe and worldwide. The activities in MagIC are concentrated in three working groups: Magnesium Processing, Magnesium Wrought Alloys, and Corrosion and Magnesium Surface Treatment. In the area of cast alloys, the development of new high temperature stable alloys is a major issue in the Magnesium Processing Group as well as the optimization of the casting route. To achieve an improved property profile grain refinement and castability of magnesium alloys and additional topics of research. The expertise in casting of magnesium is also used in the development of new magnesium wrought materials with improved deformation behaviour and superior mechanical properties within the Magnesium Wrought Alloys Group. The development of new cast and wrought alloys are accompanied by the development of standardized Mg recycling alloys. All developments are supported by a full characterization of deformability, physical, and mechanical properties. In the Corrosion and Magnesium Surface Treatment Group, the determination of the influence of composition and processing route on corrosion behavior is of major importance. This includes the development and characterization of new surface coating systems to enhance the area of applications for magnesium alloys.
